Many engineers in the past had very minimal, if not bad, communication skills because they majorly worked within companies. This is not the case anymore. While today’s engineers don’t need to be necessarily great authors or speakers, effective communication skills are increasingly becoming important. Of course, work does not occur in a vacuum, and that’s why engineers need to communicate well on a daily basis. Add to this the competition for clients/employment and you will perfectly understand why you need to communicate well as an engineer.
In your engineering career, you will need to communicate with other engineers, project supervisors, and clients. Engineering is technical and complex in nature, and not every person you’re dealing with has the technical expertise you have. If you’re an employee of a company, you will need to communicate with other employees in other departments because collaboration is very important in such a setting. Engineering field involves the use of a technical language, which you need to break down for those who don’t understand. It is advisable to avoid using technical terms unless you’re communicating with your fellow engineers. Remember, the most important thing in communication is for both parties to understand each other. Certainly, you will want to be on the same page with other people you’re working with.
